Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta – Hands on

The last 2 weekends I’ve had the chance to go hands-on with the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta.

From what I had seen previous, I was quite intrigued to see which way they were taking this game. When I managed to check out the create a class section, I was very happy with what I saw, back to the basic create a class, primary, secondary, lethal and tactical grenades, and your 3 perks. None of this pick 10 malarky which I thought was an absolute mess of a system.

In the weapons section, there is a gunsmith where you can unlock various attachments for your weapons. This is nicely split up into different sections such as sights, barrel, grips etc, with this you are limited to 5 attachments on your weapon, so you can mix and match these to your heart’s desire.

The attachments unlock for you as the gun ranks up, I managed to get one of my weapons to around Level 25 and found that most of the attachments were unlocked, but there were still a few to get.

The return to the more basic and standard Create a Class was very welcome for me and I can’t wait to get to fully try it out with all the weapons when the full game is available.

When playing some Team Deathmatch, which is mainly the only mode I play multiplayer on, I found the game was a smooth experience, vaulting over objects felt good, the guns felt nice and you could tell the difference between using an SMG and Assault Rifle. I swapped between the MP5 SMG and M13 Assault rifle, these were my go-to weapons on the beta, both felt good and nothing felt overpowered. I loved the return of the claymores as well, although I’ve been that used to having a grenade that I forgot I had Claymores loaded in and tried to throw a claymore…. Didn’t turn out too well for me.

I thought the maps were decent that we got to play, however, one thing I did have an issue with was how to matchmaking was working, there were times where I would get the same map over and over and at one point had Azhir Caves 5 times in a row. This is the point I turned the beta off, I know there was only 3 or 4 maps, but to give me the same one 5 times in a row was getting ridiculous. However, I do know there will be more maps in the final version, so this should be just an isolated incident to the beta.

However, I am looking forward to seeing what the other maps in the game are like. The design on the ones in the beta was decent and I especially liked Hackney Yard.

I will say though, as much as I did enjoy what I played, there are still some aspects of the game which seem to get in every year. One particular thing you can check out in the video above is the spawn system in play. I die, stupidly of my own fault testing out if I can shoot the chicken… I could. I died. Cest la vie. But then I get spawned in the same area that has several enemy players looking down on the ridge above…

I will no doubt end up getting the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare when it releases on October 25th, I enjoyed my time with the beta and it’s nice to things being dialled back and going back to the basics.

This was only a quick overview from what I played and I should have a review going live around launch for the game.
